Houlton Regional Hospital Houlton, Maine
Completed 2004

This seven phased renovation project completed in 2004 successfully updated the out-patient delivery for nearly every department within this regional community hospital. Additions to the X-Ray and Emergency areas along with a complete updating of Respiratory, Mammography, Laboratory functions, as well as Admissions, Medical Records and the Operating Rooms, have allowed the Hospital to keep pace with today’s changing health care delivery.

The design element that has tied the facility into a cohesive unit is two massive intersecting Kalwall roof systems. Originally the building had been designed with a series of open air light courts which collected little more than leaves and snow and were of no particular value. By combining these into covered interior space similar to a mall with services fronting onto this new and very patient friendly corridor we created a cohesive and very inviting space in what in most circumstances would have been a traumatic experience.

One of the major challenges we successfully accomplished was that we were able to phase to work to accomplish the major renovation/addition work while maintaining the facility operational at all times. The completed work stands today as a testament and confidence the Hospital had of the entire design team and our abilities.
