Small Point Harbor Cottage Phippsburg, Maine
completion 2003
A summer residence on a prominent and historic point of land at the entrance to the harbor, the original structure had for years been used as a navigational aid to fisherman on their way home from long days of fishing along the coast. Designed as a “shingle styled” home the use of stucco found precedence from some of the early John Calvin Stevens homes in Portland, circa 1890 to 1930. That stucco material combined with native stone on every facade embodies the architecture of homes along the shore in that bygone era.
The resultant cottage utilizes detailing so prevalent of that time but combines today’s technology into a home that will serve and delight the owners for many years to come. The play of light as it bounces off the many faceted surfaces changes with the suns movement. The rich hues of the setting sun penetrate deeply into the living spaces as evening approaches creating subtle variations of color in this ever changing palette.
